Watchhouse
Brinta by Studio Makkink & Bey
August 3 until October 26, 2008
Vijversburg, Tytsjerk
The Watchhouse designed by Studio Makkink & Bey (Architect
Rianne Makkink and Designer Jurgen Bey) has been made of straw, the residue
of wheat, that was stored in crates, which were then piled up to make
the house.
Studio Makkink & Bey gets inspired by what is present. Every solution
already exists in the world surrounding us. It is only a matter of recognising
it and converting it to something useful.
This basic
idea was put into practice at the 'Vijversburg VI' estate, by working
from the plough lands, that can provide both raw materials for our food
as well as construction materials for a place to stay in.
The studio ploughed the land, sowed wheat and built a watch-house on the
existing brim of the stork nest.
Straw in crates were piled up to make the house.
The way of building
created an effect that is similar to timber framing, but is instead built
up out of transportable modules. Just like the other follies on the estate,
it is suitable to repose in for a while.
The view on the pasture carries a new perspective, in the field of grain
the letters 'Brinta' can be seen, which closes the cycle: The wheat gives
an oath to the well-known breakfast-product with which generations have
grown up.
The Watchhouse
is one out of thirteen projects set up for the Vijverberg VI exhibition
in Tytsjerk
Art historian and
curator Ankie Boomstra selected the participating artists and asked them
to create new work, fitting the theme. She also selected a few existing
pieces for Vijversburg VI.
National and international artists and designers present their works,
inspired by the theme Time is short and definite, derived from the sundial
in the park.
