Dutch
Village: Innovative traditions in design from the Netherlands presented
by Design Academy Eindhoven and Royal Tichelaar
Makkum
In the past decades in the Netherlands, as in many other western countries, various crafts, production techniques and local industries have disappeared almost entirely. Ceramics, glass, wood-and metalworks, tin-and bronzecasting, embroidery and knitting; all have been minimised and replaced by anonymous mass-production. Several Dutch designers noticed this ‘loss of tradition’ in time and passionately threw themselves on the endangered materials and techniques. This has resulted in many recent well-known Dutch designs, such as the ceramics, glass and textiles by Hella Jongerius, bronze and aluminum objects by Studio Job Smeets, recycled wood furniture from Piet Hein Eek and various designs by Jurgen Bey. All these designers graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven in recent years and now work, together with many other alumni, on the cutting field of Design, Craft and Industry. From this temporary "Dutch Village" in New York, new ideas, prototypes and designs from 49 designers who graduated from Design Academy Eindhoven, including Jurgen Bey, Hella Jongerius and Job Smeets for Royal Tichelaar Makkum. Whispering
Sources, Radical Reduction: The spatial vacuum between culture and economy is a very inspiring theme to Annink. Is it possible to bridge between these two areas; can designers move between culture and economy? The stories behind the objects, forgotten sources, history and contextual awareness are elements which Annink uses to give a face to his designs. Felissimo presents the first solo exhibition of Annink's work in the U.S |
