Maarten Baas
Moss, New York
May 15-23, 2004

An assemblage of unique pieces created by Dutch designer Maarten Baas, in cooperation with Moss, in which historic examples of the most innovative moments, including the Rococo, Jugendstil, Mid-twentieth century, and Contemporary periods (having been the strongest personal influences in the studies of this recent young graduate from Eindhoven Academy, the Netherlands), are systematically burned, and then preserved with an epoxy and, where required, re-upholstered in a precious wool textile created for this project by Dutch artist Claudy Jongstra.

The exhibition will consist of 25 pieces, including Gerrit T. Rietveld's 1918 Red/Blue chair and his 1934 Zig Zag chair; Antoni Gaudi's 1902 Calvet
armchair; Charles and Ray Eames's 1946 Moulded Plywood chair; Isamu Noguchi's 1948 free-form coffee table; Charles R. Mackintosh's 1902 Hill House chair; Ettore Sottsass's 1981 Carlton (Memphis) room divider; and Tejo Remy's 1991 chest of drawers, "You Can't Lay Down Your Memories".

As in the great steam engines of the nineteenth century, Baas proposes design as a "fuel" which, when thrown on the fire, releases energy to propel us forward. When the smoke settles, the charred, scarred, spent, but proud and beautifully transformed state of these icons celebrates their profound contribution. A new "family" of cherished objects emerges, similarly used, wasted, and therefore strangely related through the eloquence of their metamorphosis.

Shrink NYC: RSVP-event
oganized by Archis
bi-monthly magazine, and cultural thinktank for architecture, city and visual culture
New York City, May 16, 2004

Most cultural debate today is organized according to worn-out formulas: the conference, the lecture, the seminar, the workshop. Art and architecture seems to have been reduced to the mantra of academic exchange, far removed from realities in which they are not only topic of discussion, but also a source of conflict. Archis is therefore introducing a new form of debate. Events in which reflection and action coincide.

Archis RSVP Events are a series of nine actions that will be organized all over the world - from Berlin to Beijing, from Amman to New York.

They are response-based - The form of each event is determined by the size of the response; in other words, we ask people to respond to the content and this response helps us to determine the actual form of the event which might be anything from mass demonstration to free-running, from cruise to performance; from mega event to flash mob

Improvvisare NY , Chelsea Hotel, NY
Design Academy Eindhoven
May 15-18, 2004

Improvvisare New York is the Design Academy’s third and final installation based on the theme of improvisation as executed by select graduates. The previous installations attracted major press attention during the Salone del Mobile and Tokyo Designers Block. The team of designers will come to New York City to create a surprising site-specific installation, using nothing but found materials. The end result will be a clever commentary on disposability versus value, waste versus design, and will invite spectators to take a critical look at their own surroundings.
Participating designers are: Mark van der Gronden, Cynthia Hathaway, Joris Laarman, Christien Meindertsma, Reineke Otten, Marc van de Sande, and Neeltje Westenend

iL-studio investigates the possibilities of foam, that is mostly used for the fabrication of cushions. Producer Recticel manufactures the unique FrameFoam®, that is so strong that a wooden or metal frame in a sitting object is no longer necessary. The Amsterdam based designer goes one step further and uses FrameFoam® in the entire design. Last year, she has designed two fauteuils and a sofa, in which not just the frame but the entire objects were made of solid FrameFoam®. Because the foam in itself is too hard to sit on, Leijn thought of creative solutions to create comfort.
