Lace Fence by Demakersvan

Showroom MAMA Rotterdam

In January 2008 MAMA (Media and Moving Art) in Rotterdam contacted the designers Demakersvan with the assignment to produce a customized Lace Fence for their new office at Kromme Elleboog 35.. Judith de Graauw from Demakersvan designed a varied and beautiful pattern for the five windows. MAMA chose for a galvanised iron Lace Fence where it is also to obtain in white.

Although Lace Fence has earlier been installed as a separating wall in an office building in Amsterdam and recently as a pergola in Milaan, this is the first application to prevent burglary. Siebe Thissen (CBK Rotterdam) labelled the work as an `public artwork related to security’.

The production of Lace Fence is manual; it was made in the factory which Demakersvan set up in Bangalore, India, in 2007. Dutch firm De Melker provided the heavy industrial frames, in which the Lace Fence is stretched.
