Exhibition Dutch Design Awards
During the Dutch Design
Week in Eindhoven, Dutch Design Awards presents the highlights of the
2006 competition. From October 21 through October 29, 2006, the most exceptional
designs that were selected and nominated for the Dutch Design Awards 2006,
will be on display in the Klokgebouw at Strijp-S in Eindhoven.
The prize-giving ceremony
of the Dutch Design Awards 2006 will take place on Saturday, October 21,
in the Klokgebouw, Strijp-S, in Eindhoven. The programme kicks off with
a mini seminar presented by The Dutch Design Awards in collaboration with
Adformatie. During Design Nu, keynote speakers Jeroen Verbrugge, Tom Dorresteijn,
Janus Smalbraak, Paul Mijksenaar and Frans van Mourik will discuss the
commercial power of design. After the seminar, the visitors are invited
to a celebratory design buffet, followed by the prize-giving ceremony
of the Dutch Design Awards. The evening concludes with a spectacular party.

Robert Bronwasser designs in his own living room
SMOOL Live is an interactive
presentation of Amsterdam based SMOOL design studio. Every day of the
Dutch Design Week, designer Robert Bronwasser will design a new product
in his own living room. Visitors can influence the design by giving comments
and suggesting ideas. The results will be presented on the website at
a later stage.
SMOOL’s living room will be furnished with products from its own
collection, recent designs, and entirely new concepts.

In the Dutch Living Room,VanBerloStudios will exhibit several projects from its portfolio: inspiring products that are the result of the unique approach of VanBerloStudios to product design and design management.

The best graduation projects of academies in the Netherlands and Flanders 2006
Items’ annual
graduation special presents the best graduation projects of all the academies
in the Netherlands and Flanders. The editors are members of Items’
permanent staff, and experts. They visited all the graduation exhibitions
of the art academies in the Netherlands and in Flanders to come to a first
selection of graduation projects.
Committees of external experts were then asked to make a final selection
of the best works. As usual, this selection is published in the Items
magazine, and put on display in a second annual show in CBK de Krabbedans
in Eindhoven.

The design project Copypaste History builds on the early 2006 election of the best 20th century Dutch design. However, we have entered the 21st century and an entire new generation of up-and-coming designers are busy making a name for themselves. In many cases, these designers are directly or indirectly building on the achievements of the 20th century. They sample and assemble as much as they like. There are tongue-in-cheek copycats and serious followers. And it is precisely this multifaceted process of building on tradition that Copypaste History is about.
Five young designers
from various disciplines are challenged to translate a Dutch design icon
of their choice through copy pasting into a new 21st century design. Participants
are Fons Schiedon (multimedia), Joline Jolink (fashion), Franke Elshout
(food design), Studio Ditte (product design) and Machine (graphic). On
the occasion of the project, a theme-specific essay written by critic
Timo de Rijk will be published.

New Dutch automotive design
The centre of attention of the show is the Volvo C30 Concept
Car, which is on view in the Netherlands for the very first time. The
design is by the Dutch designer Fedde Talsma.
The show proves that design is a matter of interest for car manufacturers
as well as for their suppliers. The show also links design and technique.
The development of design is an ongoing process with technique as one
of its drivers.

From October 21 through
October 29, the city of Eindhoven will be the platform for the celebration
of the fifth anniversary of the internationally acclaimed Dutch Design
Week. With more than one hundred exhibitions, conferences, lectures, workshops,
films, guided tours, and company visits, the Dutch Design Week is the
largest design event in the Netherlands. In 2005, more than 43,000 visitors
visited the event.
Visitors of the Dutch Design Week (DDW) will be able to take a look behind
the scenes of today’s design and acquaint themselves with tomorrow’s
products. Virtually all design specialties will be presented, ranging
from product design to graphic design and from industrial design to conceptual
design. As it is DDW’s ambition to increase internationalization,
designers and design schools from abroad have also been invited to present
their products, concepts, and visions. During the DDW, Eindhoven, which
is designated European Design Capital 2006, will be steeped in design:
visitors have access to various galleries, workplaces, and studios in
the city centre. Many activities will take place on four distinctive and
centrally situated locations in Eindhoven: Strijp-S, the Temporary Art
Centre, the grounds of the Technical University Eindhoven, and De Witte
Dame building.
Opening Day
The DDW kicks off on Saturday morning, October 21, with the opening of
‘Graduation Galleries 2006’. Organized by the Design Academy
Eindhoven, this exhibition highlights the exceptional and innovative work
of 140 graduated industrial designers.
In the afternoon, all prominent visitors will meet again at the opening
of Design United. This unique, comprehensive programme follows from the
cooperation between the three Faculties of Industrial Design of the Technical
Universities of Eindhoven, Delft en Twente. Students of these universities
will exhibit works relating to the themes of ‘care’, ‘entertainment’,
‘public space’, and ‘home’ in the TU/e grounds.
The title of Design United refers to the relation between the three universities,
the link between user and technique, and the connecting role of design
herein.
The debate ‘Design for All’, which is organized by KITTZ,
will also take place in the afternoon. The debate will focus on the significance
of user-friendly designs. Design for All is a design strategy that offers
economic opportunities to the business sector, as splendid design combined
with user comfort makes a product or service desirable for the larger
public. The debate seeks to provide fresh impetus to this vision.
The participants in the debate are: J. Wijn, Minister of Economic Affairs;
H. Heemskerk, Rabobank Nederland; R. Sjamaar, managing director Gazelle
Bikes; K. Vermeulen, proprietor of PLUS Supermarkt Amersfoort; P. Kortenhorst,
chairman collective board of transport company Connexxion; S. Duetz, head
design HEMA.
Listeners are very welcome.
That same evening, all eyes will be on the prize-giving ceremony of the Dutch Design Awards, which takes place in Eindhoven for the second time. The programme kicks off with a mini-seminar presented by The Dutch Design Awards in collaboration with Adformatie. The evening concludes with a spectacular party.
Participants
For the rest of the week, Eindhoven will be the heart and soul of design-loving
Netherlands. Besides many large-scale activities, there are again some
interesting smaller activities such as the Design Etalage Route in the
city centre, a temporary Design Restaurant in a unique accommodation designed
by well-known and less well-known designers, and the Young Designers Network
Showroom with various fashion shows and theatre and music performances.
The Cheops seminar Airport on the Move will initiate a broad-scope social
discussion about the current knotty problem of airports. Another stunning
exhibition is ‘Yksi meets Rietveld’, in which Yksi in collaboration
with Rietveld by rietveld presents old and new furniture by Gerrit Rietveld,
including the first-time showing of the prototype of the sixth chair in
the collection of Rietveld by rietveld: the Crate Chair. ‘Yksi meets
Rietveld’ is the first exhibition in the new Eindhoven Design Huis,
which during the Dutch Design Week opens its doors in the former Cantonal
Court-house next to the City Hall.
The TAC (Temporary Art Center) is with its multidisciplinary GoTAC programme
the ultimate creative meeting place during the DDW. Here, visitors can
stay the night in one of the specially designed hotel rooms of the TACinn,
hop on one of the eye-catching TACsis that shuttle between the TAC and
the DDW activities, grab a ‘mobile’ bite at Street food, or
watch the movie in the drive-in cinema.
Dutch Living Room
In addition to permanent participants such as ITEMS, Lift Off, GreyTones,
[ZOO]producties, and MU, a number of large leading design bureaus including
SMOOL, Motio Development, NPK industrial design, Van der Veer Design,
Bruns, Van Berlo Studio’s, and the design departments of Philips
and NS (Dutch Railways) will also take part in the DDW. In the ‘Dutch
Living Room’, they will show the most recent developments in their
line of industry, and organize various free lectures, workshops, and other
events. Dutch Railways, for instance, will organize a design competition
for students, the winning design of which will actually be applied in
trains.
