Brick: the exhibition25 May - 1 July 2007
Brick: the exhibition shows the experiments architects, designers and visual artists ventured into with the brick as a starting point. Inspiring, exciting results from 16 participants from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds, originating from 1 assignment: develop a new type of brick.Groothandelsgebouw, Rotterdam A unique exhibition and the only one among the large offer by Rotterdam 2007 to go into the materialisation of architecture, with tactile works on a human scale. Brick: the exhibition is not a showroom with products, but a presentation, especially designed by the stijlinstituut amsterdam, featuring true art inspired by brick as well as new, commercial designs suitable for further development within the brick industry. participantsArchitects, designers and visual artists set to work on the assignment to come up with a new type of brick. The .ekwc expects to see a wide-ranging totality of results exactly because of the involvement of all these different disciplines. The experience the .ekwc has with bringing together a variety of disciplines in a workshop setting has shown that mutual inspiration brings individual projects to a higher plane. This will have a positive effect on the outcome of this project. During two rounds of world wide application, the participants have been selected by the international selection committee, which was set up for the purpose of the Ceramics & Architecture projects. Participants in the Brick project are: (click on their names for more information) Marian Bijlenga (visual artist, designer), The Netherlands David Binns & Alasdair Bremner (ceramists), United Kingdom Hilde Danielsen (visual artist), Norway Evan Douglis (architect), United States Martina Florians (visual artist), The Netherlands Christine Jetten (ceramist) / Edwin Smolders (architect) / Sebastiaan Robben (architect) / Susan Tunick (ceramist), The Netherlands/USA NEXT Architects (architects), The Netherlands Ben Oostrum (designer) & Rob Bonneur (architect), The Netherlands Marieke Pauwels (visual artist), Belgium Remko Posthuma (visual artist), The Netherlands José Rojas (architect), Mexico Christine Saalfeld (visual artist), Germany Jan Schabert (architect), Germany Baukje Trenning (designer), The Netherlands Arnout Visser & Erik-Jan Kwakkel (designers), The Netherlands the project - brick
By setting up special projects, particularly its studies into innovative ceramic building materials, .ekwc publicises the fact that it is also a place where architects can experiment with ceramics. One of these projects is Brick, in which architects, designers and visual artists from The Netherlands and abroad have been asked to develop a new type of brick or come up with a new use for existing bricks. why brick?
Brick has been around for thousands of years and is still relevant today. Brick has always been the most obvious building material in use in the Netherlands. Not only is brick a high quality product, but the choice of colours, shapes and textures also inspires architects time and again. Now that the facade no longer has a structural supporting function, but is simply the skin of the building, brick can shake off its rectangular nature. And that is where the challenge lies... Could the new brick be round, hexagonal,
perforated or transparent? |
