September Design Month in Amsterdam.
Amsterdam will be the scene of various special exhibitions and other events.

Present-day graphic design in the Stedelijk Museum
From 3 September until 7 November 2004 the Stedelijk Museum CS will present an exciting survey of present-day graphic works of designers from Amsterdam that were purchased by the municipal authorities of Amsterdam in 2003. The presentation will include works by Jop van Bennekom, Hansje van Halem, Joes Koppers, Harmen Liemburg, Lost & Found, Mevis and Van Deursen, Richard Niessen, Esther de Vries, Roel Wouters and other designers. The works were selected by a jury chaired by Marten Jongema, the graphic design curator of the Stedelijk Museum. The exhibition will also include works by the renowned Italian graphic designer A.G. Fronzoni from the Stedelijk’s own collection.
The Netherlands has a long typographic tradition of its own and ranks among the leading countries in this field worldwide. Typical of Dutch typography are a clear structure and contrasting shapes. In the years after 1920 Piet Zwart was an important pioneer of Nieuwe Typografie (New Typography), which was influenced by the primary colours of the De Stijl artistic movement. Examples of famous names from after 1960 are Otto Treuman, Wim Crouwel (Total Design) and Gerard Unger, the designer of typefaces such as Swift and Gulliver

Exhibition of the winners of the Dutch Design Awards 2004
At the initiative of the Beroepsorganisatie Nederlandse Ontwerpers (BNO; Association of Dutch Designers) and Designlink, the Stichting Nederlandse Designprijzen (Foundation for Dutch Design Awards) has in 2004 for the second time organised a contest for Dutch designers and the organisations that commissioned their works. The entire Dutch Design selection of 2004 can for the fist time be admired at the exhibition that will take place from 10 September until 10 October 2004 in INIT, a new complex including an exhibition area on Amsterdam’s Oostenburgereiland. This exhibition will be the key event of Amsterdam’s 'September Design Month’ during the Amsterdam Architecture + Design 2004 theme year.
The Dutch Design Awards contest covers a wide range of disciplines, varying from graphic design, illustration and furniture design to interior design, jewellery and designs for open spaces in town planning. A jury of experts selects the best designs for the 'Dutch Design shortlist', from which the award jury then selects the winners in each discipline.

Exhibition of the works of the furniture designer Hein Stolle
This year the architect and furniture designer Hein Stolle is celebrating his 80th birthday. To commemorate this event, an exhibition of his furniture designs will be organised from 19 September until 30 October 2004 at WonderWood Amsterdam’s new accommodation at Rusland 3. The exhibition will of course also feature Stolle’s two most famous designs: the Emmen stool and the T-46 table. The seat of the Emmen stool consists of three massive parts declining towards the centre. As no specimens are known of the small series in which this stool was originally produced, WonderWood Amsterdam decided to produce a new, limited series of Emmen stools. Stolle’s T-46 table features in the collections of several museums. Stolle will undoubtedly go down in history as ‘the man of the T-46’.
As a furniture designer, Stolle was a member of Groep & (which comprised Wim den Boon, Hein Stolle and Pierre Kleykamp, 1946-1950). In the early 1950s Stolle designed furniture for the distinguished department stores de Bijenkorf and Metz & Co, often in cooperation with Martin Visser. And in the 1950s and ‘60s he also designed various pieces of furniture for furniture factory ’t Spectrum. After that period he focused more on architecture, but continued to design furniture, too. WonderWood Amsterdam has now taken several of his ‘hidden’ designs into production.

Woonbeurs Amsterdam: focus on design
From 28 September until 3 October the Woonbeurs will be held in Amsterdam’s RAI exhibition centre – an annual fair presenting novelties in the fields of home furnishing and interior design. This year the fair will be a little different from its predecessors in that each of the four halls in the RAI will focus on a different theme: Innovation, Pleasure, Together and Smart. With workshops, presentations, styling tips, furnishing and entertainment the fair will appeal to all the senses. Here visitors will be able to taste things themselves, feel things themselves and make choices themselves – in other words, do things themselves. The Woonbeurs will as usual be organised in collaboration with the six lifestyle and interior design magazines published by Sanoma Uitgevers: VT Wonen, Eigen Huis & Interieur, Ariadne At Home, 101 Woonideeën, More Than Classic and Home and Garden. An infallible formula bound to guarantee a surprising, stimulating and inspiring experience. Being the largest lifestyle and interior design event in the Netherlands, the fair will of course include plenty to appeal to people of all tastes. All styles will be represented, from trendy to classical and from rural to modern. Here, visitors will find the latest trends in interior design, exclusive design from Milan and numerous leading brands of furniture, kitchens, floors, beds, bathrooms, fabrics and accessories.
Dutch designers are ‘hot’ both within and beyond the Dutch borders. Via Milano, an exhibition of the most remarkable Dutch designs straight from the furniture and design fair in Milan, is entirely in line with the innovative theme. Surprising solutions, smart layouts, useful lifestyle tips – all this and more you will find under the heading of ‘Smart’. Here you will also be able to admire the innovative designs of students of the Design Academy - award-winning concepts that were previously on show in Milan. One row of stands will feature smart design solutions and handy utilitarian objects that will make visitors gasp with delight. Besides works by renowned Dutch and foreign designers the fair will also include designs by young talented graduates of Dutch design academies. More information: www.woonbeurs.nl

tHuisfront alternative interior design fair with surprising concepts
From 28 September until 3 October 2004 the tHuisfront will for the third time take place in Amsterdam’s Oostelijk Havengebied (Eastern Harbour Area) – an inspiring off-site interior design fair organised in and around Loods 6 as an alternative to the Woonbeurs in the RAI exhibition centre. This year the tHuisfront route will include more venues in the Oostelijk Havengebied. There will be special exhibitions, for example, in De Cantine (next to the new Lloyd Hotel) and in Pakhuis Wilhelmina: the spectacular tHuisfront-Wilhelmina experience. The collective building Loods 6 will again be the centre of the tHuisfront event, this year featuring no fewer than eight inspiring presentations/concepts, such as Het Zeeuws-Meisje wonen: low-cost starters’ houses designed by property developers and architects on the basis of pallet construction. The small houses are furnished by well-known stylists in cooperation with chain stores best known for their favourably priced products such as Leen Bakker and HEMA. There will also be a Potpourri-Wooncafé with an impressive collection of chairs, tables, lamps and dinner services collected by the stylist Eddy Frings. All the products will be priced and can be purchased. Voyeurs among the tHuisfront visitors will enjoy catching a glimpse of the kitchens of families elsewhere in the world in the shops along KNSM-laan.
One of the most refreshing eye-catchers of tHuisfront will be an ice parlour built and styled by Marjolein Vonk in collaboration with the Swedish Ice Hotel. The parlour will be built from blocks of ice from Lapland in a specially refrigerated tent and will be alternately furnished as a bedroom and a dining room. Other forms of ‘natural living’ will meanwhile be presented in the park in front of Loods 6, such as living in a ‘glass tree house’, outdoor showers, mobile saunas, etc. A variation on the theme ‘working from home’ will be presented at tHuis CEO. This presentation will include everything from an inflatable instant office to a squatters’ tent and from a cardboard home office to the world’s smallest conference room. Another theme will be ‘Musts for Millionaires’, where the weirdest kitchen utensils, from a radish peeler to a tomato deseeder, will be presented and demonstrated.
And at Design on Demand, finally, students of design academies will turn any object brought along by visitors – from a cheese slicer, an old chair or a broken stool to a hopelessly old-fashioned wall clock – into a newly designed product. For 5 euros the students will in the Design Laboratory turn something second-hand into something new.

Exhibition of works submitted for the 2004 HEMA Design Contest in Living Tomorrow
Until 15 September Living Tomorrow Amsterdam will host a selection of the works submitted for the 2004 Design Contest organised by the HEMA chain of department stores. This year the assignments for the contest were a tea service and an invisible bra. The contest was open to students of design academies in the Netherlands and Belgium. This year’s winner is Jurre Groenenboom with his tea service called Tuit (“Spout”). In the context of the Architecture + Design Year the exhibition of the award-winning and other designs was expanded to include HEMA design products from the past five years. Living Tomorrow gives an impression of what our world may look like in the 21st century. The project presents designs for products and services that may improve the quality of our living and working conditions in the near future. Visitors of the HEMA design exhibition can arrange a guided tour of Living Tomorrow by prior appointment.
